__ In order to be successful in Mathematics, you need to not only listen in class, take careful notes, and ask questions as needed. You also must practice regularly - to learn the skill, to verify to yourself that you know the skill, and to also improve in competence, facility, and speed with the skill. In order to verify that you have mastered the skill, you must always correct your work. If you do not correct, you may think that you know what you're doing.. but may have answers that are wrong without you knowing (and thus really haven't mastered the skill). If you get an answer incorrect, you need to immediately try to figure out how to do the question correctly to arrive at the correct answer. If you can't.. you need to seek help from a teacher, a friend, a parent, a peer tutor, a tutor, or from someone in the resource room (23) at lunch. You need to be responsible for learning Math - your teacher can present the material to you but it is you who must do the work to make sure you can do the question yourself.. and you who must know when it is time to seek help.
The Vérification de Compréhension (VC) is part of the homework mark as it is one of several ways to check on whether homework was completed. If homework was completed as per above then it is likely that the mark on the VC will reflect that. It serves to not only let the teacher check in on students' capabilities in a certain skill, but also allows the students to know for themselves whether they seem to have mastered that skill or whether they need to be putting in more work to master it.
The VCs this week on fractions and on positive negative numbers are checking in on skills that were taught in previous years and that are very important for this unit and for the algebra units. The skills were briefly reviewed and then students took the Vérifications de Compréhension. A student who has a mark below 80% may need to be doing more review themselves. I have other worksheets available, there are links on the left of the page with practice, and there are also many many more sites with instruction and practice in these skills if you search the Internet. These two skills will show up again on the first test on Friday September 30.
